In which I eschew actual review for petty irritation

I am about 3/4 done with Laurie R. King's latest, The God of the Hive, which is the ninth in her Mary Russell series and follows on directly from the last book. I don't have a review--for some reason, I never feel as inclined/capable about book reviews as film. I don't know why that is ( Read more... )

Ugh. I just got this one from the library and haven't brought myself to open it yet. I've been increasingly annoyed with the Russell books in general as the series has gone on. Everyone seemed to love the one before this but my patience with her has about run out. I think I'm done.

I want the series to be good, because I was very emotionally attached to it when I was younger--I was 15 when the first one came out, and so was Russell, and it was like my own self-insert (well, aside from being totally different. We had the same hair). I think now I just want to be up-to-date on something, and I'm not really reading any other current authors.

Yeah, head over the head is never fun and never a good idea in writing. It pulls me out of the story to be continually force fed a reference. I'm always surprised when the editor lets writers get away with stuff like that. But then again, maybe the authors really fight to hold onto it. That is a shame.

It is! And surprises me in a professional novel in a long series.

Oh, darn. I tore through this series when I first discovered it (as you know), but I didn't like the last book as much as I had the initial few. I was hoping it would pick back up, but this sounds dismayingly like a downward trend. :(

Yeah, I'm not really enjoying it anymore, but that probably also has to do with my tastes changing and all that.

That's exactly it--don't you love that little feeling of discovery when you know something you didn't before? Or that is a little obtuse? Yeah.

Oh, so do I. It's sort of miserable, how little I read. Especially compared to how I used to be.
