One thing I find interesting about Welles is the mystique of Welles. Mystique is a bad word for what I mean, but there are--as you point out--various theories about him, attempting to make of him a thesis project or a story. I think this happens with most famous figures, although Welles does seem to attract particular sorts who want to draw conclusions.
