Twilight reaction post

Some disclaimers: I just got back from the film and fear if I don't talk about it now, I won't bother later. And I'm also writing this from the point of view of someone who read all the books for the horror of it, rather than 1) a fan or 2) totally disinterested. I think that'll color things. Plus, I'm about to go to play a gig, and I need to pack ( Read more... )

thank you for the review. I have heard from several other people who weren't huge fans of the books (but did read them) that they actually enjoyed the film better than the books. It sounds like the screenwriter was able to take the story from Meyer's terrible writing and turn it into something entertaining, and that the cast, particularly Pattinson, is able to give the characters a lot more depth than Meyer could ever come up with. I've read a lot of interviews with him that are just hilarious--it sounds like he says whatever pops into his head--about Edward being a stalker and that he hates the character, about the books being Meyer's creepy sexual fantasies, about being scared of the fangirls, stuff like that. I want to see it just for him, too, but I think I can wait for dvd.

I probably could have waited, too, but a friend convinced me we'd have fun. And I did--it helped, too, that I had an already-paid ticket voucher about to expire.

I am on my way to look at your post but I had planned to see that movie anyway. It was well-reviewed in the NYTimes in a way that made me think I'd like it. Thanks!

Edward is a ridiculous, maudlin, bipolar, stalkery weirdo

From everything that I've read this is exactly how Pattinson intended to play the character. Whether or not the "masochistic ... 13-year-old girls in America" realize that is probably minimal. They've been pretty oblivious to the things that they don't want to see thus far. The ONLY things that make me interested in seeing the movie were Pattinson and Stewart. My disinterest in contributing to the film's opening weekend totals and listen to screaming mobs during the movie have kept me comfortably at home. Maybe in a few weeks. ;)

Otherwise, your take seems to jive with alot of what I've read. Twilight isn't not horrible, it's not great. It's better than the book. Stewart and Pattinson do what they can with the material that they are given.

I knew this going in, so who knows how much it colored my reading? And I'm certain you're right about the capacity of people to overlook the creepy--hell, I was a teenage Phantom of the Opera fan who probably embodied a lot of that quality.

I felt weird about paying for the film, but in all honesty the gales of laughter Edward provoked from an audience that from the looks of it was the target market was worth it.

HI NOW I CAN READ!!!

What a great review! You're a genius.

I guess I did feel like most of it was over the top. Bio scene takes the cake, true, but there were many other scenes I found similarly ridiculous, and it kept me truly amused through most. Dunno whether it was on purpose, but it certainly made it something enjoyable to watch instead of ho hum.

I'm not sure I'm a genius. Well, no, I am, but probably not for this. ;) But thanks.

^ That made my day.

Ha! A bit--only with no real reason to be so mopey, and with taller hair.
