Books: My Heartbeat by Garret Freymann-Weyr

Last night I finished Garret Freymann-Weyr's My Heartbeat for my young adult lit class. And I think I may have found the closest thing I ever have to a YA novel that deals with sexuality in the way I want to see it ( Read more... )

I haven't read any YA fiction in quite a while mostly because neither of my kids do. At 16, Aaron was reading Updike for fun, so books like this just don't make it into my house.

This does sound really interesting though. I appreciate books that aren't neat and tidy about life.

I read more YA fiction now than I did when I was one, because I think YA authors are able to transcend a lot of the categories adults require in their fiction. It's really not kids's stuff, and it tackles a lot of the juicier bits of life adult fiction shies away from.

(Also, I prefer plot/character to style, so I don't like overtly literary books.)
