Phantom of the Opera: 1983 Hungarian-style! With screencaps!

For years, I considered the 1983 Hungarian tv-movie of Phantom of the Opera to be unavailable. I hadn’t exhausted every avenue, perhaps, but it had proven much more difficult to find than any of the others. This is for two reasons. One, that it is only available on DVD in PAL format ( Read more... )

You should have told me you didn't have this version and were looking for it. I would have sent you my VHS tape and let you keep it. :D

Jane Seymour was one of my favorite actresses when I was growing up, and I always thought she would have been wonderful in the role of Christine. Imagine how excited I was when I read the Complete Phantom of the Opera by George Perry and discovered she actually WAS Christine at some point. Unfortunately, whoever wrote and directed this horrible adaption of le phantom had absolutely no idea what to do with her.

First of all, whose genius idea was it to give her an American accent? Everyone else in this movie is using some variety of British or faux!Hungarian accents... did they just decide that having an English actress using an English accent was too obvious? (I tell you, if there was a way to insert Jane Seymour from Somewhere in Time into this movie instead, I would work the technology in a heartbeat ( ... )

They released a NTSC vhs version? Interesting.

I have no idea what was up with her accent; it was really strange. Maybe her slutty brashness made her American? I don't know. And you're right on about Scarlet Pimpernel throwback; I was thinking that too. But yeah, Somewhere in Time was awesome.

I thought I'd made clear that I hated the Leroux--perhaps I should revise. It was even worse, knowing that they apparently had access to Leroux.

Oh no no no! You made it perfectly clear.

I was just throwing in my own personal opinion as if you cared. Or had asked. Which I guess you didn't. Hmmm...

Americans = sluts? I LIKE that analogy!
