I don't usually read books with "book club" discussion questions in the back. It's not as ingrained a warning as the "O" stickers (damnit, I was going to read A Million Little Pieces, too), but it's up there. I think that's a little harsh; I'm sure you could find a good book in the lit/fiction section if you tried. =)

But yeah, it's appalling that hacks like Crichton are in general fic and commentators on our condition such as Dick are relegated to scifi.

Mills & Boone sounds like the UK (Australian?) equivalent of Harlequin; the buzzword for trashy romance, right?

I can see where it'd be difficult to try new things if you have to buy them all; I haunt used bookstores and never buy anything new. Plus, I work at a library. Still buy books, though. I'll have to remember to recommend some "regular" fiction for you. What do you like?

I hear you about Dick; since he's dead and all I'm spreading him out pretty thin. I'm all upset because I'm going to CA this month and he's one of the only people I'd really like to meet. I'm also alotting my Diana Wynne Jones pretty scantly, since I'll be so sad when I run out.
