Stepping out from the warm, comforting haze of the dominating townhouse I caught sight of the quietly braying mares on the darkened street. My lover smiled at me anxiously and took my hand as we met the carriage driver and exchanged pleasantries in the light rain as Emmanuel’s belongings were fastened its roof.
For some reason I took a liking to the aging horse driver with his worn leather boots and hide gloves, I think it must have been the way he looked at us, daring not to say a word but knowing that I loved my blonde companion dearly.
It comforted me in some way to know that silently perhaps someone understood.
In no time all had been made ready, and the beating of my nervous heart was slowly drowned out by the hollow sounds of hoofs against wet stone.
We sat in silence, my beloved and I, myself out of nerves and he from dislike of interrupting my thoughts. The streets were awfully quiet. It was almost unnatural and it worried me.
When the outskirts of the town were behind us, he put an arm around my shoulders and turned to me.
“Are you troubled, Ville?” He sighed, kissing my forehead as was common for him to do “so quiet tonight”
“I worry, that’s all” I smiled meekly, our fingers still laced tightly together “but I trust you, love”
His hand slipped about my waist and my head rested gently against his shoulder in repose, letting him run his fingertips through my hair which was somewhat damp with the rain.
He kissed my lips warmly and stroked my temple, and with that I began to fall into a small rest as the rickety cobbles of the street gave way into smoother countryside lanes.
I woke gradually to the sounds of the forest around us. My vision adjusted, I saw that we were moving through shadowy and dense thicket, the morbid trees obscuring the night’s moon.
Emmanuel still held me as close as before, dozing just lightly himself through semi-sheathed blue eyes. You’re mine I thought quietly to myself and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you
“Mm, Ville what’s that sound?” He muttered under his breath. What sound? It took a moment for me to realise it but there were hushed baying sounds, the sound of barking.
“Wolves my love,” I replied kissing along his neck affectionately, I had grown up guarding fields, I had no fear of wolves “no great concern to you and I, sleep kulta”
I was just contemplating that we had been on the road for the past hour or more when I both myself and my sleepy consort were startled by a loud thump from above us.
“What on earth was that?” Emmanuel stressed looking up at the carriage ceiling as I did. I glared at him suddenly.
“Jonne,” I said shakily “why have we stopped?”
