Dree had been staring at a blank screen for the better part of an hour. Every time her fingers found the keys and she started to write the message, a thousand thoughts started swirling and there was nothing to say. El was off saving the universe, and she needed to be focused on her job; not on what was happening back home.
The sound of a body shifting drew her attention away from the screen and Dree looked over to the couch against the wall. Her four-year-old was asleep, but moving from what Dree could only guess was a dream.
Pushing away from the desk, Dree moved over to the couch and knelt down. Reaching up, her fingers pushed aside Leora's brown curls and smiled. With a slow breath, she leaned over and pressed a light kiss to the toddler's forehead, then looked at the pink and purple cast on Leora's arm.
She smiled, remembering the girl's insistence that she have both colors, which Chapel was - thankfully - able to agree to. Lightly covering Leora's wrapped wrist with her own hand, Dree forced a smile and looked at her daughter again.
"Mama's gonna kill me for this," she whispered.
