The snap in the afternoon's air had brought the evening chill, made even more blistering thanks to the strong wind that almost howled. Anyone who had to be outside had better be bundled up, because the cold cut through a person.
The slow rotation of the cape light, up on top of the hill, was unphased by the wind, and did its duty to any ships that might be passing by.
Below the light, in the small living quarters, the lightkeeper was oblivious to the weather, focused on the tea currently steeping. Once satisfied with the strength of her drink, Garnet Oliveri lifted her cup with both hands and moved over to the armchair.
Her home wasn't much to be envied, but she didn't mind. The space was just enough for her; she was comfortable in her solitude. Garnet set the teacup down on the small side table, then reached for the blanket hanging over the back of the armchair. Turning, she made quick work of sitting down, curling her legs up and covering her lap with a blanket.
Once she was comfortable, Garnet pulled the collar of her husband's sweater just a little higher and she settled into the chair. Reaching toward the tea, Garnet grabbed the letter that had arrived in the afternoon's mail. Unfolding the pages, she smiled and scanned her husband's chicken-scratch until she found the place where she'd stopped reading, earlier. Reaching for the teacup, Garnet smiled as she finished reading about what he was doing while off fighting the war.
