Disclaimer: For the first time, I can say that EVERYTHING about this one is MINE, ALL MINE. Mwahaha!! This is an AU!Dree for a roleplaying game over at InsaneJournal, which has since closed.

Dree leaned against the counter as she sipped her tea and watched the activity in the living room. Sniffing his way along the length of the couch, a puppy was in the process of exploring his new home. It had been a stressful two weeks, mostly because Dree had gone back and forth over her decision to bring the dog home.

A random stop into the humane society found Dree standing in front of a small pen, where a litter had been born to one of the residents, abandoned when her owners found out the dog was pregnant. Dree had been watching as the puppies in the littler climbed over each other, vying for the attention of the human on the other side of the kennel.

Dree's attention, however, had been on the smallest puppy, hiding in the back corner. One of the girls working at the humane society was trying to push the friendlier puppies - they were still two weeks from being old enough to be adopted, regardless - but there was something about the loner that had Dree drawn in.

She visited three more times that week, mostly to talk herself out of considering adopting the small terrier. When the veterinarian told Dree that the last of the other puppies had been claimed that morning, Dree knew that she had to act. Five minutes later, she'd put down the adoption fee, signed the paperwork, and had an appointment for a first-time pet owners class.

A week later, Dree arrived at the humane society with a purple collar, a simple chew toy (to keep him distracted during the trip home), and a crate that was far too big for the small puppy. Unfortunately, to go with anything smaller would make the puppy uncomfortable as he grew bigger, but the associate at the pet store had assured her that the puppy wouldn't mind the extra room.

They put the crate on the floor, and the veterinarian helped hold the puppy while her assistant placed the collar around the puppy's neck. Dree hadn't decided on a name, yet, so she had a temporary tag to attach to the collar. They suggested that Dree sit with the puppy for a few minutes, giving him time to get used to her smell, outside of the shelter's kennel.

After about ten minutes of the puppy squirming in her hold and investigating the chew toy she'd brought, they decided it was time for him to explore his new temporary home. Dree carefully put the dog into the crate, followed by the chew toy, and then closed the door. She watched him for a few minutes, until the vet assured Dree that it was safe for her to take him home.

When the puppy was done exploring the living room, he pounced back into the kitchen, straight for Dree. She smiled and knelt down, giving him a scratch behind tiny ears as he sniffed her hand. "Are you ready for your first walk outside?" she asked him, reaching up to set her teacup on the counter. With a glance to the clock, Dree noted that they still had about half an hour before his scheduled feeding - thanks to the checklist from the shelter - but getting him used to the leash was one of the tasks at the top of the list.

The puppy gave her a small bark and circled himself in front of her. Dree smiled and pulled herself up, then moved across the kitchen to where the new leash was waiting for its first use.
