Max couldn't help but smirk as his dearest childhood friend gave him a dirty look and cursed his name. Maybe it was because she hadn't actually said it that he found so funny, but that she had signed it. She was the one calling him stubborn, when she was the one who was avoiding her assigned task.
His own mother was doubly stubborn, and he learned from observation. She would huff and stomp off, sitting in the corner with a pout, and then finally get over it and try again... usually when it involved getting on the horses at the ranch.
His father and uncle had a different approach, which usually involved hauling her over one of their shoulders and dropping her in the trough or the lake. Grampa would just raise an eyebrow then continue on as if nothing had happened. Mel would put on a pout and try to distract her with sex.
For a moment, Max wondered how much of his mother's frustrations were because of all of them ignoring her, as he was currently doing to Tally. She was supposed to be working on her speech therapy, and since he was home for the summer, the Royal Medic had enlisted his help.
And Max would do anything for his godmother, without question.
There was a clanking in the kitchen of the guest house - Tally's parents had allowed her to move out there, so she could be an adult - and Max closed his eyes. "That's not the kind of noise you're supposed to be making," he warned, though he knew that Tally probably only heard a third of it. He moved over to the edge of the island counter and leaned forward, watching as she slammed cupboard doors in search of... something.
Watching as Tally finally found what she was looking for, Max pushed up and stepped around to meet her, then raised an eyebrow as she glared at him. He didn't say a word as he stared, waiting for her to make the first move.
Tally closed her eyes and huffed, then spoke. "Peas." A smile crept up Max's cheek and he nodded, then reached up to collect the mug on the top shelf. Holding the cup in front of her, he raised an eyebrow.
"Now, that wasn't so hard, was it?" Tally glared at him, thumped him in the chest and took the mug.
"Ow," he laughed, reaching up to rub at the sore spot.
Tally moved to the opposite end of the counter and set the cup down. "Go 'way, Mas," she told him, looking out the window toward the palace where her parents and brother were living.
Max moved behind her, effectively pinning her between himself and the counter. Leaning down, Max rested his chin just next to her better ear and said quietly: "Never." He leaned back just enough, helped along by her shoulder-checking him, and he waited for her to turn. At the look she gave him, Max couldn't help but smile.
Maybe he needed to take a page from Mel's book...
