Dree entered the diner and smiled as Ne'la waved to her and pointed to an open booth. She had about half an hour before she was due to meet Max and Chapel, and a slice of pie was calling her name. Even though she already knew what she was going to order, Dree reached for the menu and gave it a glance.
A moment later, the outline of a person in her peripheral caught Dree's attention and she turned to see Max, beaming at her. Setting the menu down, Dree gave her son a mischievous smile and she twisted toward him. "Well, hi there."
"Hi!" the seven-year-old beamed. He bounced slightly and reached up to set a pencil and some paper on the table. "What can I get you?" he asked in a serious-ish tone.
Dree's eyes narrowed slightly, but she was still smiling. Max was wearing an apron that had clearly been folded over a few times, so he didn't trip. "Well," she started, with a look behind him, Dree noticed Ne'la holding up a finger and then waving for her to humor him. "Um," she continued, making a face, "I would like some water, please. And pie."
Max nodded and leaned against the table, his tongue sticking out as he wrote down what she wanted. She smiled watching Max get the words on his first try - he was doing so much better now that he was in his new school - and her eyes went a little wider when he looked up, quite seriously.
"Do you want ice cream?" Dree made another face as she pondered that, then scrunched her nose and shook her head.
"I wouldn't mind some company while I have my pie, though," she said, glancing up as Ne'la came over to join them. "Are you due for a break?" she asked Max. Max shrugged and looked up at Ne'la.
"Oh, I think you've earned a break," the woman nodded.
Max smiled and grabbed his pencil and paper. "I gotta give this to the cook! It will be ready in not a lot of time!" With that, he disappeared around Ne'la and Dree shook her head.
"There was an emergency," Ne'la said, nodding toward the hospital across the street. "And you're early," she added with a smirk.
Dree nodded and leaned slightly, noticing that Max was now standing at another table, talking to the guests. "How did this start?"
Ne'la leaned to look back and waved a hand. "He wanted to help out. It's slow, and he's been doing a great job." Giving Dree a nod, Ne'la added: "I'm thinking of hiring him, full time." She winked and started to move back. "Usual pie?"
"Yes, please," Dree answered. "And some ice cream for your new hire." Ne'la moved behind the counter and pulled the strawberry pie from the cooler, then called Max over. A moment later, he was back at Dree's table, minus the apron, and climbing up into the booth to sit next to her.
Dree gave him a hug and kissed his hair. "You smell like pancakes."
Max looked up at her and nodded. "There was trouble in the kitchen," he told her. Waving her closer, Max held a hand up to cover his mouth and he whispered: "There is still bat-ter on the ceil-in." Dree's eyes went wide as she leaned back, and he nodded.
Ne'la returned to the table a moment later, with a slice of pie for Dree and a small bowl of vanilla ice cream for Max. "Enjoy," the older woman said, and she moved on to refill some coffee at another table, leaving Her Highness and His Majesty to their desserts.
