Everyone's around, no words are coming out
And I can't find my breath, can we just say the rest with no sound
And I know this isn't enough, I still don't measure up
And I'm not prepared, sorry is never there when you need it
And I do want you know I hold you up above everyone
And I do want you know I think you'd be good to me
And I'd be so good to you, I would

He's been at the party now for almost an hour. She had invited him, but he has yet to see her. He wasn't really expecting to see her the whole time, of course. It's a work thing and she was being nice, inviting him along. But, there's still a part of him that hopes it would have turned out to be a date.

Though, if it had been a date, wouldn't he have picked her up? He didn't, as she was heading to the event straight from work. Of course, picking her up would have entailed taking about four steps down the hall; five, if he didn't want to seem overly-excited.

It was his night off, and she had to cancel the weekly pizza-splitting, due to the party. Not that he couldn't have eaten the whole pizza by himself, of course. But, the system worked and, well... he looked forward to it, each week.

Now, he's just standing in the corner, watching a bunch of strangers talking to each other and giving polite smiles to the various arm candy looking his way, as if he's candy without an arm. And, judging by the looks the women are getting from their dates, he may not survive long enough to even find her in this crowd.

Suddenly, there's music playing and people are cheering. Apparently, the sound system failed, so - based on a comment from one of the men standing within earshot - someone managed to hotwire the CD player into the office intercom. A few folks are now dancing, and someone decided to fiddle with the lights of the large conference room.

All they need is a disco ball, which another nearby employee mentions is probably hidden away in the supply closet, after the last three-day all-nighter.

He's about to give up when he sees her. Well, he doesn't actually see her, but her head, bobbing and weaving through the crowd. He can't miss that hair, blonde as it is. Holding his beer, Rick can't help but lean slightly, hoping to get a glimpse of her, to remind her that he's there; that he did make it.

Even if she didn't exactly expect him to show up.

He can hear her laughing, but he still hasn't seen her. His mind is now running all sorts of theories about how she's there with someone else, and he's the fool near the chips, nursing a beer.

He's turned away when she finally manages to push through the crowd. As soon as she arrived in the doorway, four women started needling her for details about the guy in the corner. She waved it off, for them, but that he actually showed up...

God, she is such a girl.

When she finally sees him, her first thought is to look down and make sure she's presentable. Which, really, is a joke. Especially because he's seen her in all states. But, she's dressed up for the party, and he's dressed up and- She has to mentally smack herself before she starts drooling like an idiot.

He's here as a friend. He isn't here for a date. Even if she wants it to be a date.

Taking a breath, she puts on a calm - if not indifferent - face and moves toward him.

"Rick..."
