I'm having one of those days that I'm sure you remember all too well-- the days when you realize that life will never be the same again. My little nephew finally got his diagnosis, and it isn't Asperger's after all. He has PDD. My sister asked the pediatrician (who is amazing, btw-- it's Dr. Pattidge down in Orem, I think?) if he has ever seen a child with PDD mainstream and he said, "Well, I'd like to say yes but no, I haven't. But maybe Matthew will be the first. Let's set our sights for that." I want to look at all of the positives but tonight my heart just aches for him, for my sister, for their family, because life with Matthew is not going to get easier for a long time.

Remember though that diagnosis can change especially if the child is young. Connor was originally diagnosed as PDD-NOS but then later on they decided it was in fact Asperger's. Plus, kids routinely go way beyond what doctors say they can do. My sister Chelsea is an example of that the doctors said she would never talk, she does. They said she would never do a lot of things that she does amazingly now, she functions way beyond what her IQ number says she should be able to. Only God knows these kids true potential, and He's not telling! If there is anything I can do to help let me know. There are some AMAZING support groups here in UT if she's looking for support. Also some just great activity/get together groups (my favorite are the Big MAKs http://utahmaks.blogspot.com/ because they are so fun and irreverant!) It's not easy, in fact there's an amazing essay on the Big Maks site called Holland Schmolland ... )
