Disturbing stuff

Recent SixApart stuff has prompted this post.

I have just set my 'content' to "safe for babes", which it is, in the sense in which SixApart mean it. But not in my mind. Because I write about Stuff that Happens, and I know from my childhood that this Stuff can be very disturbing.

There seems to be a schizophrenic attitude towards sex in the USA and (perhaps) to a slightly lesser extent in the UK.

Sex => "Shock! Horror!" as if it is something none of the "good" people would ever indulge in.

Things that cause real problems in the world, and that might genuinely cause worry and concern in the young => "Ho hum [zzzzz]"

So, I always say: If you are asked to join the human race, just say NO!

"Island of the Blue Dolphins" perhaps?

My mother went through a fair bit of electroshock therapy when I was 3 yrs old (I have a big blank in my memory at that point; it picks up again about 14 months later) and she's always been *grateful* for it - but one must also bear in mind there were no pharmaceuticals to treat her, at that time. ECT is still an effective treatment for certain intransigent forms of depression (*hmmmm*) and it's much milder now than it was in the mid 1950s.
