John Victor Shea, the JFK National Award recipient, demonstrated his love for Western Mass. by talking lovingly about his days growing up in Springfield and attending Cathedral High School.

HOLYOKE - The chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives, the first Roman Catholic priest to serve in that capacity, has been selected to receive the John F. Kennedy Award in conjunction with the city's March 17 St. Patrick's Parade.

The prestigious award was established to honor the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy of Brookline, Mass., the nation's first Roman Catholic chief executive, who was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963.

It is given to an American of Irish descent who has distinguished himself or herself. The winner last year at the parade's 50th anniversary was John Shea, an actor with ties to Springfield.
