Review: ‘Stealing Home’
December 31, 1987 | 11:00PM PT

For all the sadness and loss in Stealing Home, the story of how a privileged boy’s love for playing baseball is gone with the sudden death of his father, the film remains too remote emotionally to elicit more than a sigh of relief at its conclusion.
....
For Billy, baseball takes priority. It’s something he breathes for and something he cherishes sharing with his equally fanatical baseball-loving dad (John Shea).

Cast: Mark Harmon, Jodie Foster, Blair Brown, Jonathan Silverman, Harold Ramis, John Shea.

Harmon narrates the proceedings as Billy Wyatt, whom we first meet as a 30ish pro ball player. An immediate flashback takes us to the recent past where we see Wyatt bumming on skid row, living with a cocktail waitress. He gets a phone call from his mother (Blair Brown) that his childhood best friend Katie (Foster) has committed suicide and left a will putting Billy in charge of her cremated ashes. As Billy reluctantly returns home to fulfill his responsibility he daydreams and we flash back (within the flashback) to his baseball-obsessed youth, and his relationship with Katie, and to a lesser degree with his Dad (John Shea).

Appealing `Stealing Home` A Warm Slice-of-life Saga
August 26, 1988|By JACK ZINK, Entertainment Writer

Blair Brown gives an attractive performance as Billy`s mother, a bright young woman whose spirit is dampened by the death of her husband. That`s John Shea, whose brisk performance as the proud pop gives zest to some early scenes.

Later, the film moves into intermediate flashback and Billy becomes 16-year-old William McNamara, who comes equipped with a painfully horny best friend (Jonathan Silverman), a glamorous mother (Blair Brown), an affectionate, baseball-loving father (John Shea) and a sweet-faced girl down the street (not billed in the press material) who obligingly relieves him of his virginity.
