"Williams and others said the Cold War was such a thing of the past that many students wore T-shirts about communism to be funny."

Mind you, these kids are 6 years younger than me, and we all still wore T- ( Read more... )

Also when your curriculum emphasizes reading and math and doing well on standardized tests, things like science and history (not to mention art and music) get left by the wayside.

Education is more and more quickly becoming an elitest privelage, and we all know from history (although probably not if we have a public education) that an uneducated populace is easier to enslave. One day we'll wake up and it'll be the Handmaid's Tale here and we'll have no one to blame but ourselves.

You have made some very good points here. It makes me want to start teaching history. And jeez, I feel old.

I have great concern that the trend towards historical blindness is an American failing- another in a rather significant laundry list. The only positive of this would be that the rest of the world is *not* being as short sighted as we are, so perhaps there may be some hope for humanity in general. Unfortunately, with our nuclear and military capabilities, we're like the apes in 2001: A Space Odyssey, discovering the use of weapons but completely lacking the moral comprehension required by such a responsibility.
