The Incredible Hulk (2008 film)Age: 16
Timeline: Post-film, six months after relocating to British Columbia
Appearance:
Rory Jennings. Basically, your average high school nerdy boy with crappy posture and just enough of a metabolism to keep him from becoming a basement Jabba the Hutt. He's got no athletic ability whatsoever, but he's fast enough to outrun most (sadly not all) bullying types.
Canon History:
Here! Dr. Brian Banner and Rebecca Drake met in college and fell very much in love in a very short amount of time. They married quickly, and Rebecca wanted them to start a family right away - but Brian was always adamantly against it, even more so after an explosion at the nuclear plant where he was working (which he actually caused - being drunk around heavy machinery is never a good idea). Despite everything and everyone saying otherwise, Brian thought the radiation from that explosion affected his DNA and sperm. The two moved to Dayton, Ohio, and just as Brian was getting his drinking under control, Bruce came along. There were multiple, unexplained complications along the way, and Brian began suspecting it was because their child was a mutant.
Bruce spent his first few years basically being raised by the neglectful, distant Nurse Meachum as Brian was determined to keep his wife as far away from their monster, mutant, freak of a son as possible. But things stayed relatively happy until Bruce's fourth Christmas. The toddler woke early and opened a present from his mother - a complex scientific model, which he put together easily. When Brian walked in on this sight, he saw it as a confirmation of everything he'd ever suspected and proceeded to beat the living hell out of the boy. Rebecca got more of the same when she ran in and tried to stop it. This started Brian drinking again, and the abuse continued for four more years until Rebecca decided that enough was enough.
One morning while Brian was still supposedly sleeping off last night's binge, she packed her bags, grabbed Bruce, and got in the car. They were almost free, but Brian caught them and dragged Rebecca screaming out of the car. Bruce watched his father beat his mother to death right there on the pavement. Luckily the police arrived before Brian could do the same to Bruce, and took them both to the station. The police shrinks quickly sent Brian off to an insane asylum and child protective services shipped Bruce off to his maternal aunt, Susan Drake. She brought Bruce to see his father only once after he was committed - the visit ended after Brian tried to strangle Bruce the minute he laid eyes on his son.
She did her best to provide a warm, loving home for her nephew, but Bruce just wouldn't let anyone in. He put up massive walls, internalized all his anger, pain, and grief, and pretty much believed that he somehow deserved all of it. Susan decided to transfer Bruce into another school to give him a fresh start, and this was where he really started to show how smart he was. Goodness knows the boy didn't do anything but study - he didn't make friends, didn't join any sports or clubs, he wouldn't even go outside unless he brought a book with him. Now, without his father there to beat him for bringing home straight A after straight A, he breezed through his schooling. But he never quite managed to shake away those walls he put up after his mother's death.
Personality/Psychology:
Ever since he was born, Bruce has been guilt-ridden. His father blamed him for everything, begrudged him everything, and basically said he was a freak from the moment he could understand it. And even with his mother's unconditional love, Bruce grew to believe that everything was his fault, and this was only compounded when his father finally lost it and killed his mother. Because of this deep-seated guilt, Bruce internalizes and suppresses all anger or pain (however trivial or justified), believing that he deserves everything negative he gets. Anything positive never lasts that long, or is more than eclipsed by a new negative.
He's positively brilliant in practically every subject (except literature - he loves to read but hates the dissection), but he simply shrugs it off as not that big a deal. As he was raised to believe his intelligence was a sign of his freakishness, Bruce doesn't broadcast being smart. He doesn't raise his hand in class, he doesn't volunteer answers unless nobody else does, and even then it's very timidly. In fact, any kind of praise at all makes him rather uncomfortable as he doesn't feel he deserves it, and he'll deflect it with self-deprecation. But he does work hard at everything he does, because it's the only real way he can be satisfied with himself, and the only way it'll possibly be considered acceptable to other people. But it's a quiet, internally-directed kind of perfectionism, so he's not in your face about it.
On top of all that, Bruce has built up huge, enormous walls between himself and the rest of the world. Not only does he fear being hurt again, both through physical means or by becoming close enough that losing them feels just as bad as being beaten, but he honestly feels as if he's got nothing to offer. His self-esteem is so far in the negative, it's depressing. It certainly hasn't helped that Bruce screams 'nerd' and thus was a magnet for bullies in his other schools. And since he was isolated by the abuse as a child, then by himself growing up, he has no freaking clue how to deal with people now. As a result, he tends to stutter a little, and often hesitates while talking, with gratuitous apologies and shrugs popped in for good measure.
Abilities/Weaknesses:
Bruce has the strength, speed, and endurance of a boy his age that engages in limited exercise. The most running he's done was away from bullies, and he can't even really do that well. Plus, he's just über, über, über smart.
