I don't think it's possible to come to the party too late. I believe that the nature of fandom is that there are lots of people that join when the movie/show/book/manga are fresh and new and then it peters out into the diehards. The thing is,once the teenyboppers and those that dabble in each new fandom leave, you have the diehards that care about characterization and plot and are good writers who genuinely try to improve. At least- this is what I saw happen when I found my OPT of Batman/Joker(nolanverse). Now, it is just a handful but we're all producing high quality fics.
