"Why are you here?" she asks and her eyes are bewildered. Her lips are cracked with the dry heat.
The fire licks at the edges of her white cotton dress, singeing the edges brown. She is hugging herself with thin, tanned arms. Her hair is a mess of brown waves and flickering flames. But her eyes are still blue. Ocean blue. He almost remembers water. Almost.
He doesn't answer right away. His story is a long one. He can already feel himself losing the last vestiges of his humanity. She steps back reflexively when he turns his black eyes toward her.
"Why are you here?" he counters, averting his eyes.
She drifts closer now that he isn't looking at her. He can smell her soft skin still so untouched by the acrid smoke and ashes. He wishes she would go away. Instead she answers his question.
"I'm not sure. I guess this is the after life. I never believed in one but here I am." She sits beside him on the searing stone. Her arm brushes his. He can smell her hair now. Flowers and honey.
It's a long time before she speaks again. He can tell she's been silently crying. He can smell the salt of her tears as they evaporate. "I hurt him too many times," she whispers. "That's why I'm here."
It seems to him that it took a little more than hurting someone to end up here. But perhaps the powers that be held a contract on every soul they could acquire.
"You have an eternity to figure it out," he says flatly.
She appears fragile to him when he looks at her again finally. Something almost insubstantial waiting to dissolve and rise; fade into the ether and escape this torment.
He almost hopes she does.
