I recently posted something like this on my tumblr and I've written several stories on this theme in the Avatar verse. I suspect part of the fascination with childhood heroes who grow up to be less than stellar parents comes from actual lived experiences. How many Cold War kids felt their parents' generation screwed the world? How many Millennial are suffering for the Baby Boomers' sins? Each generation tries to save the world and ends up fixing some things and screwing up others.
