Although I do wish they had gone with someone who is the right ethnicity for Ra's, I think they made it fairly clear that Ra's is the Dread Pirate Roberts of the League of Assassins and that the current Ra's got recruited by the former, but possibly not the original, Ra's. That leaves it open for the original Ra's to have been the proper ethnicity. I don't read the comics so I don't know the actual ethnicity which is why I'm not giving the correct ethnicity. I'd guess Chinese?

True, making it a Dread Pirate Roberts situation does ameliorate it a little bit.

Anyway, according to the comics, he was from the Arabian peninsula (originally from China, but his people were nomads who wandered into the Syrian desert?) sometime in the 1400s. I've seen it posited as Lebanese/Chinese when it comes to Talia, so I don't know, but I'm not sure white Australian was the way to go (especially since they cast a Lebanese-American actor as Captain Boomerang, who is Australian in the comics).
