when tragedy befalls you, don't let it drag you down

Ugh, I could complain about coworkers who are annoying me, but instead, I want to talk about fall TV! I have not had the actual television on much at all this summer - I mean, for The Musketeers, yes, but other than that it's been all via the Roku or on my laptop. I haven't even been watching the slow motion catastrophe that is the Mets' season. So ( Read more... )

I saw Selfie when I was clicking around the comedy series list on my DVR. The name was a turnoff, but if John Cho is in it, I'll at least check it out.

Yeah, I would have passed on it totally if not for John Cho and Karen Gillan, so I guess we'll see!

I watched Selfie on Hulu two nights ago. While it's a typically rough-around-the-edges pilot, it was quite enjoyable. My only concern was that it might have been better just to have it be a two hour Lifetime movie, in that they sort of resolved a lot of her issues in the first episode. I'll be curious how they can sustain the premise of the show for 22 episodes (or whatever has been ordered for this season). But John Cho is amazing and Karen's accent is at least 50% better than Rebel Wilson's was last year on Super Fun Night, so maybe there's hope?

Yeah, it seems like an update on My Fair Lady, right? And I don't see how you get 22 episodes out of that without a lot of humiliation humor. But I guess we'll see.

How to Get Away with Murder - Taraji P. Henson!

Is it? (Viola Davis, yes, but is Taraji P. Henson in it too?)

I could have sworn I read about a tv project with Taraji P. Henson, and I was surprised because I thought she'd left POI because she didn't want to do episodic TV again, and I just assumed it was this one. But it looks like I should have checked, because you're right. *facepalm*

Still, Viola Davis makes it worth watching too!

It still looks good, though! I'll try it.

Hopefully it means they will have thought more about how to make it better than it was last season!

I'll probably check the Madam Secretary pilot, but so far, I don't really see the show having the kind of hook that would make me stay for the whole season. I'm kinda wondering if they shouldn't just have made a different show, because if the trailer starts with a scene of her as a no-nonsense snarky professor, and I would be so much more likely to stay for that. (And I'm kinda curious how it will stack against State of Affairs, which, on the plus side, has Alfre Woodard, but it also seems to be a conspiracy story, and those almost never work narratively on tv.)

And I'll probably watch Constantine, but in light of all the information we had on it so far, I'll mostly be watching because I like to get angry at my tv.

Huh, I don't think I've heard of State of Affairs and I do like some Alfre Woodard on my tv.

I'm going to guess Madam Secretary will have the hook of a woman in high office still being subject to sexism and misogyny? Or the office politics of the cabinet? It could be West Wing-ish, too, I guess. I don't really know much about it, tbh.

There's a 5 minute trailer for Madam Secretary and there is some of both dealing with misogyny and office politics, but I think some of the guest characters in the pilot might be really interesting, so I'm hoping they take one thing out of TGW's book, and instead of a lot of one-off guest stars, they keep bringing those charcters back and weaving them into the story.

And State of Affairs (there's a long trailer as well)is mostly marketed as Katherine Heigl's return to television: she's playing a CIA agent who gets assigned to the White House to brief the president on the state of foreign threats. The president is Alfre Woodard (awesome!), but the trailer seemed really, really focused on Heigl's character's having a romantic relationship with the president's son - until he got killed overseas - and how badly she's dealing with it. Although it does have a lot of promise if they course-correct and change the focus somewhat after the pilot.

Interesting! I will definitely keep my eye on both and hope for good things.
