wherever i am, i am what is missing

Ugh, I woke up this morning with a terrible headache and nothing so far has helped.

I think I might have broken geeky co-worker #3 this morning. He asked me if I was excited about Spider-Man 2, and I was like, "More like really concerned." ( spoilers for a 40 year old comics arc )

Hmmm. I'm actually enjoying the show since Cap 2, though this episode was weaker than the previous couple. I *did* like Agent May and her mum, and Skye figuring out Ward's actual villainous agenda, even if Skye didn't get to do much about it (yet). I wasn't all that fussed about the special effects, but that's because my eyes aren't really good at seeing things that are dark, so it was all a blur anyhow. I'm not as mad at Coulson as you are, but then I only really began to love him after reading all of your stories featuring him....

I thought the last two episodes had gotten better, but I didn't like this one at all, and I felt like it was a waste of cool guest stars.

but then I only really began to love him after reading all of your stories featuring him....

As much as I'd love to take the compliment, you're probably thinking of someone else. He doesn't feature much in my stories, and is usually only a background bit player when he shows up in them.

Ok. I associate the unfit for society links with you. And the stories you write about Steve and Bucky

Well, that's me, too, so I guess it makes sense. *g*

I put it back on my dvr sub after Cap 2, but they just piled up without watching, and last night I took a look at it and came to the conclusion that I just don't like or give a fuck about Coulson so it was unlikely that a show about him for some reason trying to revive a corrupt organization that was dispersed for very good reasons was going to do anything for me ever.

Yeah, I had a nice reservoir of goodwill towards Coulson from the movies, but the show burned that right up, and now I'm just like, ugh, couldn't the show have been about someone else?

it was unlikely that a show about him for some reason trying to revive a corrupt organization that was dispersed for very good reasons was going to do anything for me ever.

EXACTLY. I get that the entire foundation of his world has just been yanked out from under him, but stop and think for a few minutes, dude! Maybe Captain America (and Fury and Hill and Black Widow) knew what he was doing!

I didn't even have much in the way of goodwill. I didn't *dislike* him when he showed up in Iron Man, but knowing what I knew about the likely composition of the casts of the prospective Avengers movies, my reaction was "you have a chance to introduce a new character and add some diversity, and you cast yet another bland white guy?" And then he showed up in Thor and was a smug authoritarian dick at Jane, and I really started to dislike him. He was okay in the shorts and Avengers, but nothing to make me really care about him.

So probably a show centered around him was always going to have a hard time with me. But it might have worked with better writing or a more interesting cast; I think Mal is a smug dick too, but I found Firefly tolerably watchable anyway.

He was totally a smug dick in Thor, but I liked his relationship with Pepper in the IM movies. I never loved him like large parts of fandom love him, and I totally get what you're saying about another bland white guy. I never thought it was a good idea to build a show around him because he is not that interesting - it's his responses to the larger-than-life figures around him that made him so in the movies, I thought - but now I really don't like him.

Mal is a smug dick but he KNOWS he's a smug dick. Like, Mal doesn't think he's a good guy. Coulson does.

Your comments on SHIELD are SO ACCURATE. And so wonderfully stated. IF I had any sympathy for Coulson (which, all the good will from the Marvel movies is gone) this episode would have killed it. I have NO TIME for dudes making decisions about what ladies should/shoudn't know.

Yes! My goodwill towards him is gone now, too. I think it wouldn't be so bad if the show weren't trying to make me think he's right, but he's just not! Ugh.

Unless I missed something (which is entirely possible, since AoS doesn't hold my attention as well as I'd like), what I really liked about Skye figuring out Ward was HYDRA was that she could have thought May was the one to kill Patton Oswalt. I mean, Ward tells her that May has left them, she finds the dead body, and pretty much right away figures out it's Ward. (Please tell me I didn't miss something here, because I love the idea that she couldn't even consider that it might have been May.)

Coulson just needs to go. He's ridiculous now and I fast-forwarded through several of his scenes just because.

No, I loved that she didn't consider May at all either, but I think that's because 1. Ward had fresh blood on his neck, and 2. if May was gone, there was no need for her to put the penny on the doorjamb to see if it'd been disturbed. (Which, btw, is TERRIBLE! The penny will make noise/reflect/etc when it hits the floor!)

I wish they hadn't revived Coulson for this, because it just made me dislike him a lot, whereas I'd had a lot of goodwill towards him before (I mean, I didn't love him the way fandom loves him, but I enjoyed his quiet competence, and this show has completely eroded that).
