I had not realized until you said it (although it is obviously true) that using familiar clichés really allows the character to shine through - like, different characters are going to react to being vulnerable/a loved one’s vulnerability very differently.

Exactly! Oliver Queen is going to react to being told there's only one hotel room differently than Felicity Smoak is (and Ollie is going to act differently based on whether he's playing 'Oliver Queen, millionaire playboy' or just Oliver, who wants to get some sleep and can do so anywhere, etc.).
