have heart, my dear

So I guess the big fannish topic du jour is permissions for transformative works for fanfic? I have a permissions statement in my user info both here and on AO3, mostly because 1. I don't care that much as long as you keep my name on my stuff (though I would appreciate heads up if you want to write a prequel or sequel, since I do actually do that ( Read more... )

Are transformative works statements really becoming that much of a conversational topic? I always talk about them a lot because it goes with podficcing, but I haven't been able to tell if the topic itself is heating up. I hope it is; blanket permission statements are a HUGE help for podficcers.

I will say that recently having started podficcing in Teen Wolf fandom, I've noticed that Teen Wolf is very much more podfic-friendly than other fandoms I've been in, and it seems to be a thing that happens with younger fans/fandoms. At least that's been my impression.

There does seem to be some controversy - here is a links roundup of the various conversations.

Ah yes. I had seen most of this because I follow podficcers and podficcing coms, if not usually the anon memes. I guess I was hoping for some kind of...I don't know...sweeping panfandom thing that people outside of those circles were seeing. A lot to ask from your simple mention of it in this post, I realize, now that I think about it. :) But hey, maybe it's slowly starting to seep outward from the source. Like a fungus. :D ( ... )

Well, there are several people not on that links list talking about it in response to TFV's post, but I'm too lazy to link.

It doesn't surprise me at all, honestly, though I don't really get it myself.

Is it just me, or does this sort of prove that fans can make a controversy out of almost anything? I feel old. Where's my Ben-Gay.

Oh, it totally does. I think in the right frame of mind, with the right mix of fans, they would argue that day is night and up is down.

This is first I've heard of that particular controversy. Shall have to take the time to look at the links roundup you posted when I'm not in work.

My own immediate thoughts would be much the same as yours. It would be pretty hypocritical to not like as, as fanfic already plays with other people's creations. I'd rather love it if someone liked anything I'd written enough to podfic it, or base something else on it.

Yeah, I get that it's a question of control for some people? But my feeling is that once you've put it on the internet, any idea of control is an illusion. And while I agree that permissions or whatever are useful because the relationship between fans is different from the relationship between fans and canon creators, I think it's mostly useful because we all kind of live in the same community and it's just easier than making people upset.
