but i sang you from the dark skies, fill the sails with my own breath

So I reread Devil's Cub Friday during my train ride out to the island. It's my favorite Heyer - the first one I read, and the one I imprinted on at an impressionable age, and I think that shows because it has so many things in it that I've continued to love and look for in the stories I consume (and write):

I haven't read any Heyer, but I like this post. It's always interesting to be aware of our own narrative proclivities. Like how I started reading John Scalzi this year and was like YOU ARE DOING EVERYTHING I LIKE IN STORIES. Time travel! Identity! Black humor and punch-in-the-feels heartbreak! Narrative deconstruction! Unselfish sacrifices! I would have to think more to find my more specific preferences, but I am pretty sure I could make a list similar to yours if I tried.

*nod nod*

And it makes finding things to read much less hit and miss in some cases. I also find it really interesting to trace it back to stuff I read as a kid and what of that I'm still carrying with me.

I remember the moment I realized that of course I was destined to love Veronica Mars because even though I never thought of myself specifically as a mystery fan, I had read a shitload of Encyclopedia Brown, E.W. Hildick's McGurk mysteries, and Agatha Christie as a kid.

I knew as soon as someone told me it was high school noir, because I love noir and hardboiled detective novels. Having the tiny blonde girl be the detective instead of the femme fatale was just more incentive.

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE MOVIE.

Legolas/Gimli, the ship that built their own ship and then sailed it to Valinor! Actually, I juuust read the books before the movies came out, so while I like and appreciate book!Legolas and Gimli's sass and love for each other, the movies muddied the waters for me. (Movie!Legolas' unrequited love for Aragorn basically.)

... I have no appropriate iconage, so I guess I'll have to use this.

See, I have no issue with movie!Legolas' crush on Aragorn, but then he moves on once he meets Gimli.

I am flexible and open-minded! *g*

I don't even have any LOTR icons anymore, but here is Miranda Otto...

I find her books are nice to reread between other things, since they are usually pretty quick and fun.
