It's funny how the hallmarks of bad het fic are different from the hallmarks of bad slash, but here is one that almost never fails - repeatedly referring to the women in the story (especially the women perceived as romantic rivals of the heroine, which btw carries its own set of pitfalls and markers of bad fic) as "females ( Read more... )

writing: research, i won't read your fic if, books, tv: elementary, books: discworld

referring to women as "females" knocks me right out of the story every time. (well, and it knocks me right out of articles and blog posts too, especially if men are always referred to as "men" and women are still "females". we're not anthropological specimens or creatures in a zoo, people.) why do writers do that? hmph.

i am likewise super curious how joan decides to stay on elementary! i can't see sherlock intentionally relapsing, but unless she decides that yes, she does want to be an investigator and sherlock's "associate" - because i'm not sure i can see her as his apprentice either, altho it made me giggle that that's what he suggested, and actually i thought it was kind of charming in a "he really wants her to stay and is trying to figure out how but he should know she'll laugh at being his apprentice" kind of way - i totally lost the thread there. >.< anyway. i want to think sherlock respects joan too much to manipulate her into staying with him, and she wouldn't stay with someone who did that to her. but i have no ( ... )

I don't know! I find it really dismissive, and I think that is the intention, which. Well, no.

. i want to think sherlock respects joan too much to manipulate her into staying with him, and she wouldn't stay with someone who did that to her. but i have no idea where the ptb are going to go. i guess we'll see!

*nod nod*

I'm not sure yet how I feel about what they did do, but yeah.

Other people might have said this but as a diehard footy-fan (and footie RPS writer), it's almost impossible to understand the offside rule if you're new to the game. I mean, it was "streamlined" recently to make it easier to understand, but even that didn't work.

Which in a round-about way is me agreeing with you? Incorrect sports references throw me out of a story so quickly, whether that's profic or fanfic.

(And also a huzzah for having someone check it, and an understanding grimace of pain for agonising over one throwaway line in a story.)

Yeah, I didn't explain or go into any detail at all in the story. Just said a goal was disallowed because of an offside. It seemed safest.
