to be missing him like you do

I finished A River in the Sky the other day (Friday? I think?), which was the Amelia Peabody I hadn't read, and I enjoyed it, though I don't think it held up well as a story? I don't think there was a lot of there, there, but it did give me Ramses being off on his own (joined, eventually, by David), and I have to admit that what I want most now is ( Read more... )

bucky barnes has a robot arm, amelia peabody, books, comics: winter soldier, this is captain america calling

It makes sense to me that Steve spends a lot of time thinking about Peggy, but to have him think about Howard rather than Bucky? NO. WRONG.

Steve's thoughts re: mourning should be 45% "Peggy is gone and we never got to dance! :((((((" and 45% "Bucky is dead and it's all my fault! :(((((((" and 10% "...The Dodgers moved to LA?"

That's it how it should be and I just proved it with math. You can't argue with math.

I agree with your math!

I might even allow 2.5% Howard thoughts because of Tony, and about 5% for the Howling Commandos. But there's no way Bucky should be left out altogether.

I find these mathematical revisions acceptable!

But, really, it does bug me when stories seems to forget that for Steve, none of what happened in the war happened all that long ago. Weeks or months, maybe. All of it is still very fresh grief. :(

I agree. Most of the stuff I've written has been set later (mostly because most of it is about Bucky's return), but yes - that's why he's so angry in the movie, and why he can't sleep, and I like that Joss et al. didn't forget that.

I don't understand the substitution of Howard for Bucky, either. WTF. It was Bucky he was broken up over even before he went down in the plane, that doesn't just go away. Then again I don't get fandom's weird fixation with Howard anyway.

Another thing I've noticed is the almost complete absence of Maria Stark.

We no doubt have the comics to thank for this, since even though we have 50 years of comic history, she's only ever present with her husband and we know absolutely nothing about her except her full name. And of course the movies aren't gonna mention her, it's all about Howard. Lovely. /sarcasm

Yeah, I mean, obviously, he's going to think of Howard when he meets Tony, but I don't get why someone would spend half a story on Steve's grief over Howard and not even mention Bucky. IT MADE NO SENSE.

Ugh.

Now I want the story where after the car accident, she didn't die, she was secretly transported to another universe, where she became empress with all her math learnings, and she spends all her time trying to get back to earth and her son, and when she finally does, he's all grown up and they have a reunion and she warns him, oh, btw, Kang the Conqueror is on the way.

I would read a story like that. I'd read ANYTHING with Maria in it, actually :/ I didn't realize until I went looking that there really isn't anything with just her in the comics at all. And that's baffling, every variation of "Tony's dad is awful and abusive and alcoholic" been done and yet they keep redoing it instead of touching on her. I mean he named the charity that he uses to help fund the Avengers after her when he founded it, you can't tell me she wasn't important. And yet - nothing. Hell half the time she looks different in the comics; they can't even stick with one design for her.

Man, that's just dumb. It seems like there is potential for a lot of good stuff that would also help fill in some of Tony's behavior beyond "daddy issues."

I think there were one or two stories about her after the first Iron Man movie came out, but I don't recall fans filling in that hole either, which is a shame.

I would love to see your reactions to Code Name Verity. It was/is one of my best reads of the year, thus far. Heart-breaking, but very very very good.

And, hmmm. Yeah, I'd expect more Bucky mourning than any mourning for Howard Stark in Steve's head. I mean, he knew Stark, sure, but they weren't best buds or anything.

Do we know ANYTHING about Mrs. Stark besides her name, like where she was pre-marriage? What she did in her life besides birth Tony?

There's a foundation with her name on it, but i don't know if that was founded by her or by Tony after her death. That's all I know, and I don't believe she ever gets a mention in the comics except as Howard's wife and Tony's mother (but I haven't read any Iron Man, so I can't say for sure).

he knew Stark, sure, but they weren't best buds or anything.

Exactly! I mean, sure, he'll think of Howard when he meets Tony, and feel a few pangs, but i don't see him brooding over Howard Stark when he's not sleeping because of PTSD.

I'm liking it so far, and bracing myself for unhappiness.

Ooh, I picked up CODE NAME VERITY but haven't read it yet. I'm excited to, but also get REALLY UPSET at Nazi books, so I'm waiting for spoilers first- which is to say, I eagerly await your reactions!

I am about 1/3 of the way through BLACKOUT. My feelings are ridiculous.

The lack of direct Bucky reference(s) in The Avengers struck me as well. I took his "I've known guys with none of that worth ten of you" to be a reference to Bucky and the Howling Commandos as well, as well as the thoughts/memories as he was sparring.

To leave Bucky out of a fic about Steve's losses... NO. Best friends. Best. There was no way that Steve wouldn't think about him

The image of Tony springing fully formed from Howard's head just cracked me up. Oh my...

*nod nod*

They absolutely were - I think they probably would have had to pay the actors had they shown the clips, though. *hands*

Seriously! I read the whole story, waiting for Bucky to be mentioned and he never was! And I was just like, well, I guess I'm not commenting on this!
