let the wind blow where it will

I've been reading along with Mark Reads Lord of the Rings, and there is somehow an extra layer of geekiness in reading people discussing the Silmarillion in rot13. It makes me want to reread the books, which I haven't done a full reread of in years, though I still reread favorite parts occasionally ( Read more... )

lotr, my flist knows everything, fannishness

I enjoy him, mostly, and some of the conversations in the comments are fun. I liked the Avatar: The Last Airbender stuf best, but his Hunger Games read through was also pretty amazing.

Shameful admission: I didn't read the books until after the movies. (I did read The Hobbit in my teens, but just could not get into LotR.)

So it's interesting to me to see how the reading with no exposure to the film's visuals hits him.

God, I love it when people discuss The Silmarillion. The conversation just levels up then. (In geekiness, yes, but also AWESOMENESS.)

And there weren't terrible errors in the text? Some of the reviews I read talked about how words with accents in them got screwed up, and that part worries me.

Oh Lord. I'd forgotten about Mark Reads and I've now lost half the evening reading the LoTR posts. It's fascinating seeing it through new eyes, especially something that I first read a very long time ago. I'm so familiar with it now that I'd completely forgotten the wonder and discovery of following their journey. Now I also want to read it and my copies are all at my parents' house. Thanks for that. ;)

(I had to look up rot13. Sometimes I forget how (relatively) new I am to this stuff.)

Yeah, I was 9 when I first read LotR, so it's been with me a long time, and seeing it through someone who's just reading it the first time is really cool.

Well, if it were Christmastime, I could virtually guarantee that TNT would be airing the LOTR trilogy on three consecutive nights. However, it's not Christmastime, which means TNT spends their weekends airing the Bourne movies. I think you'll have to wait for the DVDs. *g*
