"so, what, no fucking ziti now?"

Yesterday on my train ride home, I finished Galore by Michael Crummey, which is about six (I think?) generations of fishermen in a hardscrabble Newfoundland town; it covers the Devine & Sellers families from the Napoleonic Wars through WWI. I would categorize it as magic realism - it begins when a whale beached on the shore is cut open and a still- ( Read more... )

Dick is now supposed to be 16 when his parents died. Yeah, I ignore that ridiculousness, not sorry to say.

Oh, right. I think someone mentioned that but since I think it's ridiculous, I just keep forgetting.

Oh, Yvonne Strahovski as Black Canary, good call.

I suppose I will eventually catch up on other Batman stuff to see what's up with Damian.
Oh my God, I'm reading Batman and Son right now, and WTF DAMIAN. He's hilariously awful. What a little demonchild, haaaaa.

Ugh, Galore made me grit my teeth, even when I got used to the writer's particular style and language. I couldn't connect with the characters either (and I was really excited to, as my maternal Grandmother is from Newfoundland, and I've had the pleasure of being there twice, and am intensely interested in the island's unique history and people). The ending really ticked me off. What was the POINT of all the strife, hardship, and repression? Some of it was pretty neat (the Mummers, traveling priests, and little tidbits of folklore following people over from their native countries). I certainly hope that people wouldn't take it for a completely true picture of Newfoundland and it's people, I'd be very upset if that was so.

I think people realize it's fiction. I think the ending was to show that it's a cycle? Abel jumps back into the ocean that Judah came out of? As I said, I found the first bunch of characters engaging, but not really anyone else after that, and since there were still 200 pages to go, that is a problem, even though I actually really liked the writing style.

The next time we have dinner together, I'm totally going to look at you and say, "So, what, no fuckin' ziti, now?"
