I don't really have an explanation. I ship Mal/River to some degree, and I was onboard for Simon/River, even though it is squicky (I tend to go for hetcest pairings), but for some reason, I have a visceral, kneejerk DO NOT WANT response to Mal/Simon. (I actually don't find any of the Mal slash pairings interesting on Firefly; it's a very het and girlslashy show for me.)

My 'wow, no' reaction to Mal/Simon doesn't appear to be as immediate/visceral as yours, but I share it.

I've never been able to figure mine out, but I know I have it, which is good enough for me. *g* Almost no one else shares it, though, so it's nice to know I'm not alone.

I think I buy Simon as bisexual, perhaps even in an "I identify with this" sort of way, but I honestly don't see that kind of potential for him with any of the other men on the show, not just Mal,

I don't really, either? Though I do find Simon/Jayne amusing sometimes.

for me also, most of the baseline tension in any given social/romantic/sexual relationship on the show included at least one of the Ladies

Exactly.

Interesting article about the subway. I heard a lady interviewed who had missed her subway train from a borough back into the city. She said, "They said they were going to give us plenty of notice before they shut down the system. They said they weren't going to shut it down until 12:00pm." The interviewer said, "That's right." She said, "what time is it now?" He said, "well, it's 12:20." Reminded me of attendees who saunter downstairs 20 minutes late to the general session and then get mad because the coffee is gone. People! One lady said "Mike Bloomberg is trying to compensate for the blizzard. He's overdoing it, and we're paying for it." Well, there is supposed to be an awful lot of flooding. Seems pretty smart to me.

I have eaten so many bits and pieces of my food supply that I am sick of all of it! Wasn't supposed to start eating it till the power goes off. But maybe it won't????? Be safe!

I just discovered that my gas stove - which I thought would still work even with the power out - has electric ignition, so my contingency food plans of soup and rice are kind of fucked. I have half a loaf of bread in the freezer and a tupperware container full of blueberry crumb bars, so it should be okay.

I have a lot of water, anyway! *g*
