So last night, I read the whole "Blockbuster kills everybody close to Dick and then Tarantula kills Blockbuster and rapes Dick" thing and while I didn't enjoy it, it mostly made some sort of emotional sense, but then everything after that was sort of a big wtf? She wants to get married and he goes along with it right up until Batman calls? WTF? and ( Read more... )

hoods and birds, batman, comics: nightwing, don't make me shoot you

"Blockbuster kills everybody close to Dick and then Tarantula kills Blockbuster and rapes Dick"

I... what? Is that... what? Seriously - that's like, actual canon? *blinks alot* Well fuck, if they're not going to take this seriously then maybe they ought to let someone else take a crack at writing it.

my level of rage about how Dick teams up with bad guys at the drop of a hat to get the job done, but can't be bothered to help Jason when Jason needs it so badly is going to explode

This. A million times this.

Don't even get me started on Batman stopping in at Arkham to play chess with Two-Face, but nobody bothers to visit Jason.

*daintily dabs at the foaming issue I seem to have developed* See, just... yeah. *sigh* Fuck yeah.

Lastly, Alfred is still my favorite.

Can Alfred just lay the smack down already? Just... seriously. Can he just be like "This is how it shall be from here on in, my word is GOSPEL." Only way cooler and more subtle because he's freaking Alfred?

Yeah. Well, apparently there is argument amongst some fans as to whether it's rape or not, but he clearly is in no mental shape to consent (not to mention he actually says, "don't" and she ignores it) so I don't really see how else it can be read.

It's not that they don't take it seriously so much as they never address the sexual assault portion of it directly. He's on this huge downward spiral both before and after it happens, mostly because he didn't stop her from killing Blockbuster, and some of it makes sense emotionally and some of it... less so.

This. A million times this.

It's just so weird. It feels like someone, somewhere doesn't like Jason or doesn't like that he was brought back, so they just keep screwing him as a character, when there are so many more interesting ways to use him. I don't even know.

Can Alfred just lay the smack down already? Just... seriously.

Heh. That would be awesome.

I don't care what anyone says...it was rape. That was one of the many reasons I stopped buying comics.

Someday I will have the energy to write Alfred losing his shit at Bruce and Dick and Tim. It will be epic and fun and cathartic :D

Yeah, I don't see how people can dispute that, but apparently they do? Which, whatever. They are wrong.

I am a fan of any post which includes the words "fighting off ninjas in the batcave."

Long live fandom, motherfuckers.

Hee! It was pretty awesome, so I'm going to have to track down the beginning of that particular story at some point.

So now, yeah, I have to rant about the stupid shoehorned in "Dick can't commit" story because no, that is totally not true. Not only do they shoehorn in the backstory, they shoehorn in the whole idea that he ever cheated on Kory, much less with Babs. Also retconned in was Babs being close enough to Dick in age to be crushing on him at that time. Or Babs pining for Dick when she was actually the one who was not interested in him and not vice versa. And most importantly, Babs retconned into something as close to a teenaged nerd as possible so they could play up some nerd/jock fantasy in which Dick was the shallow football star and Kory becomes his vapid cheerleader girlfriend. Ugh.

!!!!

My understanding - or at least, the way it makes sense in my head - is that he had a crush on Barbara, who was older and uninterested, so he hooked up with Kory, whom he loved (and who is awesome) and then a long while after that ended, he actually got together with Barbara, who seemed wary of the whole thing for a variety of fairly sound reasons. I didn't even really have a problem with the way she broke up with him - it was sad, but it made sense to me, emotionally.

I wasn't aware that there was stuff about him cheating on Kory with Babs. I thought it was pretty hinky that he kept dating Clancy as long as he did while he was trying to convince Barbara to get together, but he did finally put the brakes on there, so it seemed more like he wanted to keep his options open, just in case. Which didn't strike me as all that out of character. He seems to like being in relationships, or the idea of being in a relationship, a lot.

Yup, that is totally how it happened originally--which made sense for all characters involved! (I used to ship Dick/Barbara but don't anymore--they just don't seem to be good for each other when together ( ... )

I like it, but I think I kind of like Barbara/Dinah more. (And Dick/lots of other people.)

Then Dick is engaged to Kory and comes to GIVE BABS AN INVITATION TO THE WEDDING and she makes a move on him and he sleeps with her. Then the next day is like, "Oh yeah, so I'm getting married. Here's your invitation."

Ugh! UGH! I need to bleach my brain now! I'm going to pretend you never told me that, because ugh! That is so wrong on so many levels!

And a lot of people also have started writing in these little flashbacks where Dick and Barbara were dating in high school or something? It just makes no sense, but unfortunately I think a big part of it is this creepy idea of "true love" so they have to always have been with each other in a generic way with anyone else being an interloper.I don't know what the age gap is/was/whatever, but it seems to be about 6 or 7 years, right? (he's ~26 and she's ~33 is how I've been reading it) how ( ... )

Heh. While I'm not particularly interested in reading any Dick/Slade fic, I do enjoy the subtext, and I liked his interactions with Rose as well. But overall, it was very strange and read like fanfic that had gotten away from the author.
