Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about the season opener either. It was conceptually different with the music and the dream/memory sequences. It was a very slow episode for an opener, especially given that it should have been rife with tension. I just didn't feel it other than thinking "well, that kid's going to be fucked up."

Morgan's reaction, while understandable, seemed somewhat out of character. He's generally the person who holds it together emotionally, especially the last few seasons. And I wasn't surprised JJ's speech centred around motherhood - I'm not convinced it would have actually worked that way, though, but it was nice to see JJ coming across as a completely real person struggling with an assignment way outside her comfort zone.

My favourite part of the episode was Reid acknowledging that he was likely not Garcia's main man. *G*

This pair of episodes really left me cold. I had the distinct feeling in the end-of-last-season-episode that the episode was being structured as yet another spinoff (Criminal Minds LA?). I love Tim Curry and yet I didn't think this character did him justice (or he didn't do the character justice, I'm not sure which).

I especially hated the way they lit Tim Curry in that last "climatic" scene ("climatic" - god I didn't feel any tension or concern there AT ALL) - they lit him so his mouth (and those awful awful teeth) were in the light and his eyes were in shadow. It was, I'm sure, a conscious stylistic choice, but I hated it ( ... )

I thought the use of music was actually one of the really good things, or perhaps I just like Leonard Cohen. But otherwise, yeah, I was just saying to someone else, the little girl really didn't work for me - I just kept wondering if she was a sociopath in the making.

I guess they're going to focus on his emotional stuff now that they put Hotch through the wringer last season?

it was nice to see JJ coming across as a completely real person struggling with an assignment way outside her comfort zone.

yeah, though I'm concerned that this is going to be how they write her out - that she realizes she can't deal with all this stuff anymore and wants to just be Henry's mom or whatever. Which would be fine in a real person! But on a show that's apparently eliminating two of the three female characters (and the third might be moved to the spin-off), not so much.

i admit i liked the s6 premiere better than the s5 finale - the finale seemed to be all about spicer the cop, and not a team show at all, but since he got killed (and was thus out of the way), the premiere could be at least slightly more bau-focused. i kinda liked that hotch made jj talk to the unsub, because i like when he makes his agents step out of their comfort zones because they always do ok with it, but i kept wondering if that's going to be their "in" to write her out of the show, like it's the final straw that makes her realize she doesn't want to/mentally can't do this job any more. and then i was just really annoyed. >.<

which is not to say i really liked the episode - it felt kind of unfocused, and not a great season opener. i just liked it better than the finale. i did really love the music, tho.

You're right - I liked it better because we were at least focused on Morgan instead of Eric Close, but it didn't have the tension it should have had, and I'm not sure why that is, and I didn't like it enough to rewatch it to figure it out.

i did really love the music, tho.

Me, too.
