they'll forsake your freak shows and cyclones

I wonder if the DW to LJ crossposting issue from last night has been resolved. I guess we'll see.

[eta] It appears to be fixed! [/eta]I got a pretty decent night's sleep last night, for all that I was up too late 1. writing and 2. rebooting my computer after it wanted to update something or other. These days, rebooting is always fraught with the ( Read more... )

writing: neuroses, poetry, i am okay with that!

I feel like I am the only person in fandom for whom the inclusion of the term "whumpage" in the headers of a story is a turn-off.

You are most definitely not alone in this preference. Or, um, actually nonpreference. Hurt/Comfort is low on my list and "whumpage" is right off it. Regardless of fandom.

Yeah, I am not a big fan of h/c at all. It all sort of gets lumped together in my head as stuff I am not really interested in reading.

"whumpage"

That's the sound a car makes when the driver overestimates its ability to survive a pothole, isn't it?

Hee! If it's not, it should be.

Although I've never seen "whumpage" in a header, I would value it as a "stay away! stay away!" cue.

One possibility to stave off new-computer purchase would be devout use of an external hard drive (price ca. $100) so when the damn thing goes toes-up at least you won't lose anything?

I had never seen it before SPN, but apparently it is common in SG1?

I have two external hard drives, actually, and I have actually backed everything up and continue to do so fairly regularly (shocking, but true!). It's more the being completely without a computer at home part that makes me twitchy.

Heh. I had never run into the term before SPN fandom, but it is very popular. Who knew?

It's pretty big in the Stargate: Atlantis fandom too. I only like reading it if there is equal parts of happiness in the end. It's childish and idealistic, but hey, that's me sometimes.

I would guess there usually is? I mean, I generally click out of things when it gets to that point, so I don't know for sure. It's probably more realistic to end in death, or at least permanent damage, but the impression I get is that it's about triumphing over all that adversity in the end? I don't even know.

... wtf is whumpage? that's the sort of word i'd use for, like, smacking somebody with a pillow or something.

that being said, i would probably avoid fics that had it in the header. *g*

It's a term for excessive physical damage without a whole lot of the comfort that hurt/comfort allegedly provides.
