Yeah, I don't know why Cal's story was less compelling - I enjoyed the section on her life at girls school and the Obscure Object - but it didn't have the same loopy texture and inevitability as the earlier generations for some reason.
I liked all the characters, including Cal as a child, but Cal as an adult was very elusive. I wonder how much of that was deliberate and how much of it was that Cal was sort of the endpoint of the generational story?
Yeah, given how well-written the book is, I can't imagine it wasn't intentional, and maybe you're right - Cal is the culmination of the story, and as such, less a full-blooded participant and more an observer. Hmm...
though I've been told by more than one person that spraining it badly once means it will forever be a weak spot. Sigh.
That is true, but physical therapy can help retrain and strengthen it. I sprained mine five years in a row, with the last one being s very severe sprain, and ended up with physical therapy for 8 weeks, and while it still twinges, and hurts if I wear heels too long, I haven't had it go out on me in three years.
also, it really depends on how much damage you do to what kind of tissue. Ligament tears somewhat-often go undiagnosed and heal themselves in inefficient ways (that is, they are no longer doing much good at preventing sprains), and then it takes more PT to build extra muscle to make up the difference.
*tore a ligament entirely loose in 1982, did not obtain actual diagnosis until 1985, sprained that ankle black and blue and crutch-needing roughly 15 more times between 1982 and 1990*
Unfortunately, this is the second time in about 18 months for me, but I am hopeful that doing some strengthening exercises once the pain has gone away will help.

I am hopeful that there are some things I can do to ameliorate the problem, but I suppose we'll see. Getting older doesn't help, I'm sure.
