I just finished The Nautical Chart by Arturo Perez-Reverte (trans. Margaret Sayers Peden). I didn't dislike this book, but I felt the narrative strategy was gimmicky when it was revealed ( spoiler? )

I am avoiding reading your post because of spoilers, but I will say that I enjoyed the first Alatriste book by Perez-Reverte, and have the second checked out of the library (must finish Sharpe's Rifles first). The title The Nautical Chart intrigues me, though, and I know it's in the library and was thinking about getting it out after I finish the Alatriste books.

Eee, we shall have to squee about the Alatriste books if you like them! I've read all of them that have been translated into English to date.

I am planning to read the first three in English and then try to read #4 in Spanish, since the library has the original.

I am reading them because I recently recced a Sharpe/Alatriste crossover (knowing only vaguely that Alatriste was a Spanish movie starring Viggo Mortensen) and got some enthusiastic recs for the book series. I liked the first one!

I even got a copy of the film on a region 1 disc from eBay! (Not as good as the books IMHO, but eee Viggo.)

I haven't read the Perez-Reverte you cite but omigod I LOVE the Alatriste books. I devoured them all and want MOAR. I haven't gone to his others because modern settings don't turn me on quite as much.

I actually almost bought Faro's Daughter the other day. Kind of glad I didn't, now. (Ended up with Sylvester instead.)

I know other people have really liked Faro's Daughter, but the setup just really irritated me.

I was just scanning back through the FL and your poems and I found this one, which is one of my alllll time favorites. Here's the part where I feel like an asshole, though. The poet's name is actually Janice. (google) She was the second poet laureate of San Francisco and my love for her and her work knows no bounds ( ... )
