Erik had always been right. Charles had refused to see it. Stubbornly fought to see the good in everyone, even after every attempt mankind made to prove him wrong. He had been an optimistic fool. Humans would never accept them. The Mutants. Their fear was too great, their survival instincts too rooted in the world of war and violence. That which is not understood must either be contained or destroyed.
The CIA broke that optimism. During the battle on the beach that day, Charles began to learn a very hard lesson about humanity. The bullet that Erik accidentally deflected into him just missed his spine by a few short millimeters. Unfortunately, that was only the start of his problems. The CIA deemed the mutants a threat and captured Charles, Hank, Alex and Sean.
A new war had started that day. The war between man and mutant. They were locked up in an underground facility, experimented on and tortured for months while the CIA tried to discover just exactly how their mutant powers worked and how to stop them. Initially Charles attempted to plead with their humanity, but as time passed he began relying more and more on his powers to deflect, avoid, or even injure those around him. By the eighth month of their capture, Beast had sunk into a primal rage, Havok had lost all control of his powers, and Banshee had lost his mind. Charles fought to keep his contact with the others, reaching out for anyone who could help. It was then he began to realize the lengths that would be required for them to escape.
When they finally escaped in the ninth month of their capture, it was with little mercy for those agents involved. The CIA had turned civil mutants into monsters, and they reaped the seeds of their sowing. Nothing was left of the base, their prison, but rubble and fire.
