[Okay so there's a guy in a uniform there. That's item number one in Usopp's grand List of Reasons To Be Afraid. Number two is that he doesn't look hilariously incompetent like many of the marines that he's managed to beat. Number three is that his nakama are nowhere to be seen. Number four is that he has absolutely no idea where he is.
Um. Okay. Okay, Usopp, you can do this, you are the Great Sogeking! You can do anything!
Plus, very few marines can even recognize you! Oh-ho!
He stuffs his hands in his pockets, attempting to look manly and only succeeding in looking a bit small, and a bit scared. Funny thing, though, is that the guy in uniform doesn't look at all like a marine. Only one way to find out!]
...Are you a marine?
[Usopp, you are so intelligent asking him upfront like that. No marine would suspect a pirate of running up to him and asking like that.]
[He turns to regard the person talking to him, somewhat taken aback at the... odd appearance, but he smiles his usual smile and shakes his head lightly.]
Not a marine, boy. I'm a paratrooper, see? Here are my wings.
[He points out the silver wings pinned to the breast of his jacket.]
[Ahh. Paratrooper. Wings. This makes perfect sense.
...wait, no it doesn't. It makes no sense at all. He could bluff and say that he knows what they are and that the little wings stand for... special winged units, or something of the sort, and that they really like pears, but Chopper and Luffy aren't here, and when there's no audience, he won't bluff.]
[Lipton smiles, standing upright once again and resting a hand on his hip as he answers the boy.]
Well, a paratrooper is a soldier who jumps out of planes and parachutes down into the middle of a battlefield during a war. Only the best of the best can become paratroopers because we take the hardest hits... and jump out of fully-functional planes.
