My summer possibilities

Nov 19, 2005 01:59

So far, I am considering applying for a few things. I've been told that Aspen, National Repertory Orchestra, and Tanglewood are all really good places to go for librarian stuff for the summer. There are some other possibilities, though, that I've been considering ( Read more... )

I have no idea what the librarian's schedule was...as far as I know, the pay itself for the orch wasn't great - I think they got like $1,000 and free room/board. I don't think they got airfare, though. Similar for the teachers, although they did get airfare. As I recall, the orchestra was quite talented. I think they had a few concerts on their own, as well as the aria evenings with the singers and such. The venues are STUNNING, the town of Graz is lovely (and cosmopolitan - they have an H&M!!!), and you get your own (albeit tiny) room. Jonathan Morales has an online AIMS picture album through his website, if you can find it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the program to other singers (I think that for 6k + airfare you can do more with yourself), but I had a lovely time, and I think you would really enjoy it ( ... )

Hmmm...I would really appreciate the opportunity to spend my summer in Austria, especially since it's one of the few European countries I haven't yet visited. And I suppose $1000+airfare+room/board wouldn't be that bad for the 5 weeks, assuming I was considered staff. I'm not about to pay to work for the summer, given my credentials.

Plus, my future employees are going to want viable references and look at my experience. It might be best if I spend the summer here building my network of connections. A summer at Aspen or Tanglewood would definitely advance my professional goals further down the path I am going than a summer in Austria. I guess a summer in the Berkshires or the Rockies wouldn't be that bad, either.

Aspen is an awsome place but I did work in the chamber music library under an extremely jaded library intern who hated her job there. We did a lot of on-line shopping while I was there. But that's just the chamber music library, the orchestral library, I imagine, would be a much more interesting place to work.

Cool! Thanks for the info! I figure my three applications are going to go to Tanglewood, Aspen and NRO. Spoleto would be nice, too, but I can't foresee myself doing 2 festivals and enjoying my summer. I'd get a 10-day vacation, by which point both my friends will have returned from European living situations, so I couldn't go visit. :-( Blech!!!
