It's so frustrating, Rent is hardly the least accessible show going.

Another good example would be the recent production of Angels in America that I saw. There was no meddling with the setting or the dialogue or the political messages of the play and yet it was stunningly relevant and pertinent.

It smacks of gimmickery and of presuming that the public are too stupid.

I'm not a huge fan of Rent, but the original was pretty damned good. It's like these putzes are trying to compete with Chris Columbus to see who can fuck it up more.

I don't know. I write theater scripts, but I'm actually fine with the scripts being altered for the sake of the production. As long as you honor the original spirit of the piece (and that's a very fine line to walk) then I'm fine with it ( ... )
