For the last year or year and a half, my home PC has gone through several annoying issues. I've wanted to replace it (or at least parts) for a while, and probably would have, if my income was still at its 2004 level. If you want some hardware for free i'm sure I've at least got something that'll read CD-R's sitting in the basement you could install alongside the DVD drive :)

For that matter, if free is essential, I can pull the CD-R out of the system I'll otherwise be passing along.

It's a tiny desktop, though, with only one hole in the case for one CD/DVD drive. So my most favored answer is something with more-or-less the capabilities I thought I was buying.
