Robin Hanson, economist at George Mason University (also rampant blogger at Overcoming Bias) argues that we should reduce health-care spending by 50% (which would lead to an immediate 8% wage increase for everyone, and would have no net effect on health).

So, let me get this straight... some economist has managed to arrive with a set of numbers stating that, somehow, medicine is useless, so we're supposed to stop taking painkillers when we break our bones, nyquil when we get colds, antidepressents when we have severe chemical imbalances? Nevermind the fact that shit like antibiotics essentially save lives.

Are you fucking serious? What the fuck is wrong with this guy? And while I'm at it, what the fuck is wrong with you?

I'm sure I would have been just as healthy if I hadn't gotten Vicodin when I broke my arm, as well as when I broke my collarbone. But my quality of life would have been pretty fucking severely diminished. Is anti-anxiety medication going to make someone more healthy? No. Is it going to allow them to be a hell of a lot happier when functioning in our society? Yes ( ... )
