Summary: It was easy to get lost when you had nothing to hold on to.
There were many points in Rukia’s life where all she wanted was for someone to hold onto her hand.
Guidance was something she never really got but greatly wanted. Throughout her entire life in Soul Society, living had never been easy. It was always one problem after another, one mess, two messes, four messes. Something sad, something nice, something confusing - none of it ever made much sense to her, but what could she do? Defy the gods who were surely torturing her? As much as she would have loved to, she didn’t know how. Not to mention, she didn’t exactly want to even more condemned by them. Though, giving them a nice kick where the sun didn’t shine (assuming they were men) was still a very pleasant thought. Sometimes, she thought they deserved it for making her life a living hell at times.
Her childhood was just one example. She had been alone, but then made friends, wonderful, wonderful friends. It was lovely for so long, but then they all started dying off one by one. Soon, only she and Renji were left. She thought that he might have been one of the few guiding hands in her life, but even he didn’t last long. They entered the shinigami academy together, but they started to drift off because of there talents and skills. Renji graduated while she was strangely adopted by Kuchiki Byakuya, head of the noble Kuchiki house. At one time, she may have thought that he would be a helping hand, but idea that was quickly disproved. She was picked on, ignored, not made friends with, because she got to skip all of the tests the other academy students had to face when it wasn’t even her fault.
Then she had met Kaien and Ukitake-taicho. Kaien was amazing, and perhaps one of the first few friends she made in her life, Renji being the absolute first. Rukia had absolutely enjoyed her time with their squad, enjoying friendship, something she had not experienced in a long while. Even when his wife had died, she thought he would be able to continue with life, albeit extremely different. But no, he had to get revenge. Revenge against the damned hollow that had killed her. She and Ukitake-taicho had come with him, just in case, but she was sure that Kaien could defeat it. She was positive that Kaien was strong enough to take his revenge. But he couldn’t, the hollow was too strong, and he was taken over. Ukitake-taicho had tried to help, but he couldn’t - sickness overcame once again. She ran, but she knew there was something to be done, but she didn’t want to be the one who had to do it. All she wanted was for someone else to take care of it, to save Kaien, to save Ukitake-taicho, to save them all. So in the end, with Kaien’s order, she killed him. She killed one of the few true friends she had ever made.
She never did forgive herself that. Rukia probably never could.
Life continued to come and go, staying the same, with Kaien just gone. That was it, there was nothing else different in the world. Eventually, Rukia almost got over it, but even she knew that she never could. Ordinary missions came and went, nothing too big because Byakuya-niisama didn’t want her to get any promotions. She really had no idea why, but whatever. It allowed her to wallow in her own troubles more. Of course, the fateful night came when she just had to let the foolish mortal boy take her powers. But well, saving lives was what shinigami were supposed to do, right? So she was technically doing her job in the end - just differently.
And that was when life finally became pleasant, which was funny because she wasn’t even at her own world. Rukia was finally enjoying herself and the idea of having to go back to Soul Society seemed so far off, there wasn’t even any point in thinking about. Once again, her job was technically being done because she was still getting rid of the daily hollows, only with help this time around. It was like a daily schedule, but not one she hated. Wake up, go to school, ditch for hollows, hide in Ichigo’s closet, learn about the human world, eat, sleep, and repeat for tomorrow. So easy to follow, so easy to forget - wake up and smell the mortal world air Rukia. You’re not human.
It all came crashing down (again) and she was sent back to Soul Society to be executed for some nearly unexplained reason. Common guessing would be: a. staying in the human world for too long, b. giving a mortal her powers or c. both. She was betting that it was both, but it didn’t matter; there wasn’t much to live fore. All of the people she had cared about most died because of something she did or didn’t do. Kaien was a prime example, because she hadn’t saved him from his “pride” whereas Ichigo was another (or at least she thought he was) because her beloved Onii-sama felt like killing him. Joy.
Here she was, suspended in the air in a cross formation, waiting for the Sokyoku to come and kill her already. All she can think about before getting killed is how she wishes for her friends’ safety, and that’s pretty much it.
Oh, yeah, and that she wished she had someone’s hand to hold onto when her life was being crappy. Well, too late for that to happen anyhow.
