I think I've written about these before, but I can't find it, so I'll start from scratch.

If RC truly believed this, he must have felt he had no other option at the end.

I guess, but my admittedly way-outsider impression is that it wasn't a desperate act after fighting all the way down (death/suicide because all is lost), but one consciously chosen for particular reasons, "do what is necessary".
