Well, the news has been... batshit. I know y'all have seen it and are being affected by it. I myself did little besides fret over the weekend. Well, apart from joining sharebears and solarwind with Mr. 42 for a virtual movie night to watch Knives Out, which was the most fabulous dynamite-ensemble-cast murder mystery I've seen since Gosford Park, perhaps even better ( Read more... )

Howdy, friend! I'm glad to hear some Pentecost delights were had by all. I had a pretty fantastic service myself, and I even got to accompany myself on the piano singing some special music, which is always tricky for me (one at a time? no prob, but both...). I don't know if you wrote this before or after the Trump speech, but... Yep. Sad about the world right now. :(

I'm so happy you had good Pentecosting, as well! It's a pretty cool day on the liturgical calendar, and I'm so happy you to go to some excellent music for it! I haven't been asked to do a solo anthem yet (other than that one a cappella 3 minute chant, which was bizarrely difficult), but the longer this goes on, I'm sure I'll be doing that at some point.

It was written before he gave the speech denouncing protesters against police violence as "domestic terrorists," before he tear-gassed people in front of a church whose diocese he hadn't bothered to notify ahead of time so he could pose with a Bible. The man and his enablers are fucking menaces, and I hope they rot in jail.

I’m really grateful to have learned how to read lead sheets and improvise piano parts based on chords alone. Such a useful skill! In addition to the church music, I have been playing old French jazz standards with myself on vocals, and it’s so fun. My piano parts are super simple, but it doesn’t take much to fill things out.

WTAF.

I’m so glad the Episcopalian bishop called up the press (CNN) to denounce everything. I want to scream. As for jail, it CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH.

French jazz standards sound delightful! I have a single volume of a fake book that contains some American bandstand favorites, and that and my Gershwin book have been getting noodled with of late.

I used to be a much better pianist than I am now, but even if I'd worked up the accompaniment for anything, my piano is in terrible tune, and I wouldn't want to inflict it on anyone. Besides, RV is a stickler for doing liturgically appropriate anthems, so there's a pretty narrow (or nonexistent) window for most standard solo repertoire. I have basic competence on guitar, which is useful.

Yeah, didja see Bishop Curry's statement decrying it as a deeply inappropriate political stunt? It wasn't quite as powerful a denunciation of that heinous troll as I'd hoped for, but one does not get to be bishop of the US church by being overly controversial, I suspect. Still, it was both needful and welcome.

I quite liked the black bishop who told him his hands were too small to box with God, though.
