The episode of Dr. Who entitled Blink just won the Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, beating out the only other real contender (IMO), Razor. Of the five nominations, three were BBC productions, the winner, Human Nature / The Family of Blood from Dr. Who, and the episode entitled Captain Jack Harkness (the dance, the kiss) ( Read more... )

Despite what other people think I didn't like the Family of Blood 2-parter, so Blink was easily the best on that list. Razor was okay, but didn't have the pace and the bite that BSG normally has. I enjoyed it, more so the second half, but I'm not itching to watch it again. Still for me Blink pales compared to The Girl in the Fireplace which is my favourite nDW episode so far. Of course that was the season before so I guess it don't count ( ... )

I'd have to agree with you, I definitely didn't think Family of Blood was up there, and there were better Battlestar Galactica episodes. Girl in the Fireplace was great, though as you say earlier series, so not admissible for this years Hugo's.

Of the long forms, I would have voted for Heroes, if only because it was the only nominee that approached "science fiction" and was not blatant fantasy. The Hugos are supposed to be for science fiction after all, and while one might quibble over whether Dr. Who is really science fiction (or even whether Star Wars is for that matter grin ), there's no way Stardust (or Harry Potter or Enchanted can be considered SF.

I agree Stardust is definitely the best of those films, though I have to admit a soft-spot for actually seeing armoured polar bears, and thought the casting of several of the characters in Golden Compass was perfect.

You're right about SF movies tending to horror (or apocalypse), of the few SF movies I remember seeing over the last year, one was Resident Evil : ( ... )

I thought Sunshine was pretty good actually. Lots of tension, ramped up spooky stuff and some stunning (if not blinding) visuals. I was thinking of it earlier during my post but wasn't sure whether it was an adaptation or not.

Your comment about the live action Anime makes me wonder why they don't include Anime, and if they do would it have to have been translated or something.

Darker than Black was a sensational sci-fi Anime, blending elements of dimension rifts with pseudo-science and superpowers.

Doctor Who is definitely science fiction. Star Wars on the other hand is only Science Fiction by the very broadest of meanings. i.e. it is set in space there it is science fiction. To me that is kind of like saying that Romeo and Juliet set in space is science fiction. Star Wars is much more Cliffhanger meets Fantasy.
