Johnny always knew he was different. Not many six-year-old boys wanted to kiss Richard Gere. Not many six-year-old girls did, either, but Johnny always flattered himself that he had sophisticated tastes.

Johnny always knew he was different, but it wasn’t until his teens that he started to realize just how different. Not many people who wanted to kiss Richard Gere wanted to stop at just kissing. Even kissing didn’t do much for Johnny, as he learned when an older skater taught him how. Johnny figured he was just a late bloomer, that it would be different when he fell in love.

Drew was everything that Johnny had ever wanted. He fantasized about skating with him, being held aloft or caught close in his arms after a triple twist. He had a feeling he should be fantasizing about other things, especially when he saw the way Drew stared at him, and he tried, but the scene always faded out before he got very far. Johnny figured it would be different once he had some experience to fantasize about.

Their first kiss was magical, a soft touch of lips that opened into sharing nothing but air. Drew added tongue for the next kiss and Johnny followed his lead, even though he still didn’t get the appeal. Drew seemed to like it, and that was the only thing that mattered.

Skating schedules, coaches, families, and distance combined to give Johnny and Drew little time to be alone, so for a while they shared only kisses and phone calls. Then one night everything fell into place, and Drew pulled Johnny into his hotel room.

“Finally,” Drew said, his fingers creeping under Johnny’s shirt. “I’ve been wanting you for so long…”

“Yeah, me too,” said Johnny. Drew pressed against him, and Johnny felt an unfamiliar bulge. He swallowed hard and started unbuttoning Drew’s shirt. So this was it. Sex. Everyone wanted it, and here he was, about to have it. He knew, basically, how it was supposed to work. He’d touched himself enough to know that it could feel good. His body seemed to be reacting normally. He liked how Drew looked with his shirt off, and Drew was eager to get his pants off, so why not? “I’ve never done this before,” he confessed, blushing, and then blushing even more at acting like such a stereotypical virgin. Johnny never wanted to be a stereotypical anything.

Drew grinned. “Neither have I. We’ll figure it out.”

Some sweaty, awkward minutes later, Drew and Johnny shuddered into each other’s hands and collapsed on the bed. “That was amazing,” Drew said, looking sleepily blissful.

Drew’s smile was amazing, Johnny thought. Landing a perfect triple axel was amazing. But this? Maybe a 4.5 for technical merit, and there hadn’t been much of an artistic impression. He just felt dirty. Not sinful or anything, but actually, physically, dirty. He was tempted to jump up and take a shower, but he decided that would be rude. And anyway, Drew had fallen asleep with his arms around him, and that was amazing.

Johnny and Drew had sex again the next time they had the time and place, and the next, and the next. Johnny did his best to match Drew’s enthusiasm, but while some of the things they tried were more pleasant than others, nothing showed him what made the whole world so sex-obsessed. Johnny was happier when they snuggled in front of the TV and made snarky comments about reality shows, went to restaurants to eat salads and drool over the dessert menu, or stayed up all night talking. But if sex was the price for everything else, Johnny was willing to pay. They still didn’t get the chance very often, anyway.

“We don’t have to have sex every time we see each other,” Johnny said once. “I wouldn’t want you to get bored.”

Drew laughed and kissed Johnny’s neck, leaving a trail of slimy splotches across his skin. “You’re kidding, right? I could never get bored with you. You’re irresistible.”

“So are you,” said Johnny. He closed his eyes and thought of Russia.

Johnny’s acting skills started to falter as the Olympics approached. He passed off his disinterest as stress, and Drew said he understood. They saw each other less frequently, but still spoke often, and Johnny treasured their talks.

After the Olympics, after Worlds, when Johnny was still bruised from his dream falling out from under him, everything crashed like a failed quad. “You haven’t been yourself for months,” said Drew one day, pausing in his quest to unbutton Johnny’s jeans. “Are you okay? Are we okay?”

Johnny raised an eyebrow. “Of course we’re okay. I love you.”

“Then why do you touch me like I’m a pewter medal?”

“You know you’re gold to me, baby,” said Johnny, pulling Drew close and trying his best to look interested in the task at hand. “Come on, let’s get this over with.”

Drew pulled away. “‘Get this over with?’”

Johnny cursed his words, not for the first time. “I meant, come on, let’s do it, I want you-”

“No you don’t,” said Drew, staring at Johnny in an entirely new way. “Do you?”

“Of course I do!”

“Do you?”

For a moment the question hung in the air. Johnny took a step forward, took a step back, ran a hand through his hair. Drew crossed his arms and waited. “I love you, Drew,” Johnny said at last. “I want to be with you forever, to go to sleep and wake up next to you every day for the rest of my life. I just…”

“…don’t want to fuck me?” finished Drew.

Johnny hesitated, then nodded. “I don’t think I really want to fuck anyone. Ever. I never have.”

“And you never thought to tell me?”

“I didn’t think you’d understand- I just wanted to make you happy- we can make this work, can’t we?” pleaded Johnny, taking Drew’s hand in his.

Drew squeezed Johnny’s hand, then let it fall, and said the words that broke Johnny’s heart. “I think we should take a break.”

“No sex,” said Galina. “Not with girls, not with boys, not with you. You will be like monk. Understand?”

Johnny smiled.
