A friend of mine on Facebook (old high school friend) posted a picture of her puppy today on the way to get his ears cropped. Not surprisingly, a couple of people, myself included, asked why on earth she would do something so cruel and fashion-dictated to her dog. Ear cropping serves no purpose other than cosmetic "enhancement." She replied with ( Read more... )

I have never ever seen a cropped Weimaraner. They're supposed to have soft floppy ears!

Same here - all the ones I've seen have had ears much like a lab's.

I have little tolerance for those who declaw cats, too. :/

I agree with you, it pointless pain to the dog. As an owner of 3 basset hounds - the floppiest ears you can get - I have 2 who get chronic yeast infections in their ears (mainly due to them licking each others ears). So long as they stay clean between the infections with weekly cleanings we don't have much problems. It's all part of regularly grooming your animals. :/

Flop ear dogs are more prone to ear infections, but a prick eared dog is not immune to them. I have never cropped an ear ,and I never intend to ever do so. Most vets will not do this anymore, so breeders are doing it at home, which I do not think is a better option.

The only way cropping is going to stop is when the AKC wakes the hell up and outlaws the procedure. When uncropped dogs start to win over their cropped counterparts, you better believe that the "surgery" will come to a grinding halt.

And everyone else is correct. The breed standard for a Weimeraner is to be flop eared, as it is for most hunting dogs (those flop ears make it easier to find and hold a scent) If her vet talked her into that she needs to run as fast as she can and find herself a vet who is not so concerned with his monthly bottom line as to talk a puppy owner into a totally unnecessary, painful surgery.
